Even when the show got too real, Darlene was someone to root for
The Conners is ending tonight. I'm not watching because I don't have cable. If I'm going to be ruthlessly honest, I stopped watching the show a couple of years ago because it simply wasn't laugh out loud funny anymore. But if I was going to be ruthlessly honest, it was because it was hard seeing Darlene Conner not succeeding at writing. It felt too real.
When Roseanne debuted in 1988, I became a fan. The characters felt so real. Roseanne Conner was definitely not my mother; Mom was a college graduate, and sometimes thought Roseanne was too mean. Some of the situations they faced were real. Mandatory overtime, wanting an eighth grade graduation dress at the mall, hoping against hope you have money for the electric bill, oh those problems were more relatable to me than if Clair getting her family painting in The Cosby Show.
It was Darlene who stood out to me.…
